The iPhone, a filmmaker’s POV

Filed under: Uncategorized — vstraub @ 4:02 am

With increasing technology, we’ve been able to view films pretty much anywhere anymore.  It doesn’t have to be in the cinema or at home, but can be taken on the go on many portable devices.  I found a video online where film director David Lynch talks about viewing films on the iPhone.  It’s short, amusing, and somewhat profane…but I think it’s still great.

Team-Based Peer Pressure

Well, as I briefly discussed last Tuesday, I’ve currently been playing Halo 3.  That’s not something I’m particularly proud of.  I say this jokingly of course.  I did however refuse to play this game for the longest time.  I refused to give into the hype surrounding this stupid game, opting more for guitar hero or something else I can have fun in.  I had tried Halo 2 when it was released, and to be completely frank I am completely terrible at it.  Then Halo 3 came out and then the number of people in my life playing it increased.  Three people I work with and two of my regular friends picked it up and were all playing online against each other.  Then my closest friend Ken decided to buy an Xbox360 and this damn game.  Now that more people I was close to decided to pick it up, I felt obliged to.  I have a friend at an electronic store who hooked me up.  It was on sale for twenty dollars cheaper than retail at his store for a week.  I didn’t know about this but Ken told me about it so checked it out.  Yea…it was the previous week’s sale.  Luckily my friend who works at this store happened to point out that “someone” had left last weeks sale sign up and that I could get it for the cheaper price, but he was going to have to destroy the sign asap (whether I got it or not).  So it was crunch time and I finally caved in.  To be honest it’s not that bad.  I do kind of enjoy it even though I’m terrible still.  If anyone playing on Xbox Live reads this my gamertag is OneWhatIf, feel free to invite me to a match.

The internet has been expanding rapidly over the course of the last ten years or so.  The internet was initially intended for data processing and input, however over these past recent years, the main focus has shifted it seems to get the common person involved with the computer…its working.  There is a space on the internet reserved for pretty much any interest a person can have.  The internet has a space for anyone with any particular interests and background to feel comfortable in.  It was some years ago that there was the need for anonymity on various facets of the internet.  Though that still persists, there is greater use of true identities on the internet taking over.  Almost everyone and their mothers have myspace/facebook accounts.  And I’m not exaggerating on this, if you ask several college students, it’s true that their parents have spaces reserved for them on social networking sites. With the comfort of people increasing it’s only a matter of time before everyone with access to the internet will have their personal, professional, and social lives established all with the use of a keyboard.

…It’s Fun to be a Vampire

Now that I’ve posted about news that affects the entire film world, time to turn to one particular film news.  As many people do not know, filming is currently taking place for The Lost Boys 2:The Tribe.  It was originally set to have return appearances by both Coreys from the original film, Corey Feldman and Corey Haim.  Then, rather randomly, corey Haim was dropped from filming.  Something about crossing the Canadian border for filming that created a problem.  This on top of spoken tensions between the Coreys led people to believe that there would be no chance of seeing Haim in the sequel.  Well now it seems that things of changed.  /Film is reporting that Corey Haim will indeed be in the sequel.  He’s currently filming his scenes.  I’m a big fan of the original movie, it’s one of my favorite films of all time.  When I heard of a sequel I wasn’t too interested.  But now finding out that Some of the bigger names of the original are making a return has got me pretty excited for this now. I guess we’ll see how it turns out.

Deal or No Deal

Yesterday I had read that the Writer’s Guild of America strike which has been ongoing for several weeks now may be coming to an end.  I was hoping to write of that today and yet now I’m seeing current information that the strike indeed will be coming to a close.  Meetings are to be held today in both New York and Los Angeles by the WGA West and East Councils.  I think this is great news as just a fan of film and screen.  With this finalized, that means that writers can resume working on scripted television shows as well as original scripts.  The media has been so bogged down with reality tv and film remakes it’s going to be nice that some original ideas will be welcome.  Also this means that the Academy Awards should be presented without a hitch if all goes to plan.  The Golden Globes televised broadcast a few weeks ago was cancelled because of the strike.  I’m a big film fan and I try to keep up on a lot of the news in the business, and this is one of the biggest stories nobody really knows.

Building a Web

The Internet or the World Wide Web was created to gather many different aspects of knowledge on a main database. Now my idea of the Internet is not so much of databases and pools of knowledge. The web is a cluttered space of nonsense. To find a credible source on the Internet is harder then they originally planned.
I remember talks about a newer Internet where only access-based information was stored and found. I could be way off but I recall this space being similar to the Internet, as we know it now but limited and affected by the credibility of its writers and supporters.  These writers would consist of scholars and scientists alike to form these credible sources of information.  In some way this space would have to be closely governed to allow this type of atmosphere. With computers and growing technology databases and information sources that develop will be endless.

Where do we go from here?

I think it is very impressive how far along technology has come in only the last century.  The computer and everything associated with it is something that people of today take for granted, however, only in the past sixty or so years has the initiation and progression of such technology actually come to a head.  Vannevar Bush’s article “As We May Think” is solid proof in our advancement of technology.  In the article, Bush gives many ideas of ways data entry can improve.  The article states how information will be condensed and easily available with the given resources in the future.  Now we can clearly see Bush was correct in that assumption.  However, at the time these were merely rumblings of potential places the human race can advance technologically.  Some twenty-three years later in 1968 Doug Englebart hosted a demonstration.  This demonstration showed the advancements made in word processing.  Interestingly enough, much of what Englebart showed remains the same even today, such as the input of text, copy and paste methods, etc.  What does that mean though?  Does it mean that we’ve advanced as much as possible in word processing with our currently available resources?  I do believe it does.  There are some minor differences, but the basic input remains the same as it did forty years ago.  The future holds a much different outlook though.  It is possible that there are better ways for our data input processes; however, we just do not have the means to achieve them at the moment.  I think it is real interesting how journals and that we are keeping now may be looked back on in twenty/forty years and seem outdated and possibly archaic.

Global Ecologies

Filed under: Uncategorized — jwint @ 9:16 pm

We will never again enter an age where a nation can live and run itself independent of all other nations.  Technology has bridged the gap between miles and miles of ocean, desert, forest and culture.  The use and understanding of technology ecologies and technology literacy is now more crucial then ever.

“To achieve this goal, American schools must help ‘all of our children to become technologically literate’ by teaching them to use communication technologies, specifically computers, in the practice of reading and writing effectively.  The deadline for creating such citizenry—one that understands literacy practice3s in terms of technological contexts—is ‘early in the 21st century.’  (Selfe 7)

That time is now…Do you feel that the education system up to this point has exposed and taught all these things that the passage finds so important?  Have your educators prepared and designed the curriculum to create an environment where every student is considered computer literate?
